Description:

The CD-Rom is an e-learning tool developed for use in PSHE or for career guidance and is aimed at Year 12 students but is relevant for all 14-19 year olds. A Pathfinder 14-19 product, it has been developed to support young people’s understanding of Higher Education and the issues surrounding it.  Its aim is to encourage students in this age range to consider Higher Education seriously.  The CD-ROM contains four modules: Applying to Higher Education; Being an Effective Student; Money; and Online Learning.

The Applying to Higher Education module has been developed to allow users to investigate the different qualifications, courses and places of study available.
The module enables users to:

  • Understand the differences between all types of Higher Education qualifications

  • Evaluate reasons for entering Higher Education

  • Identify the different modes of study available at Higher Education level

  • Investigate courses and institutions that are suitable for the user

The Being an Effective Student module has been developed to help prepare users for the change in learning styles and self-directed learning that occurs when studying for a Higher Education qualification.
The module allows the user to:

  • have a greater understanding of Higher Education learning styles

  • Identify their own skills and qualities

  • Recognise the importance of employability skills and how to improve their own employability

The Money module was created to aid understanding of the issues surrounding money and how to cope financially as a Higher Education student.
The module will enable the user to:

  • Consider individual costs (including tuition fees, living expenses and hidden extras)

  • Investigate sources of income (including student loans, grants and bursaries, and employment)

  • Manage finances in a realistic way

  • Understand how to access help and advice now and in the future

The Online Learning (e-learning) module is designed to increase users understanding and familiarity with on-line learning. The on-line learning module covers:

  • The users future education and e-learning

  • The systems Higher Education Institutions use to deliver e-learning

  • The nature of the on-line content Higher Education Institutions make available for students to facilitate their learning

  • Using the internet to enhance study

All the modules are informative and interactive.  They have been developed to be used either as a whole resource, with students working through each module in turn, or as individual exercises to be signposted to students with specific queries about Higher Education. Young people will be able to develop and enhance skills and qualities such as; self-reflection, time management, electronic research, study skills and self-directed learning.  The modules will also give them the practical knowledge base for applying to Higher Education programmes and for becoming successful Higher Education students.

The CD-ROMs aim is to help prepare school and college students for life as Higher Education students and to encourage those who might not have thought of continuing their education to consider it as an option.
